Lyons/Summer Memorial Ride

By Chris Caskey   Wed, Sep 01, 2010

Lyons/Summer Memorial Ride

The Lyons/Summers Memorial Ride was held on the 2nd Saturday in July this year, as it lands every year.... on the 2nd Saturday of July.  Mark that date on your calendar folks.  This ride started in 2001 and has grown to include 4 men, all of whom have lost their lives over the years.  Helen Lyons, Christina Lose, and Susan PFirsching, along with many other volunteers, work dilligently every year to put on this Memorial Ride to raise funds for The Second Mile Foundation, dedicated in memory of all these great guys.  The ride boasts door prizesdelicious, home-made entrees and desserts that is sure to leave everyone going back for more as well as a mountain of door prizes donated from businesses both near and far!

For me, this ride holds a very special place in my heart.  I am fortunate enough to have known 3 of these men.  Having grown up just two houses away from Jake Lyons Sr. and his family, I spent the vast majority of my adolescent life running around with the Lyons crew.  I remember when Paul and Bill would come to visit.  I certainly remember some of the....., well let’s just say adventures we got in to!  As for Jake, words can’t describe what a great, great guy he was.  Always quick with a joke, the flash of his smile, or a pat on the back… he will be sorely missed.  All proceeds going to support The Second Mile Foundation, I can’t think of a better way to honor the memory of these men.

Each year, the second Saturday of July, plan to be there.  Visit the RWO Photo Galleries for more photos of this ride and many more!

A beautiful day for a Harley Wedding

By Crystal G.   Wed, Sep 01, 2010

A beautiful day for a Harley Wedding

We've all heard the song lyrics, "It's a beautiful day for a white wedding...", but those lyrics were rewritten just a bit for a local Central PA couple.  Instead, their lyrics went a bit like this.... "It's a beautiful day for a Harley wedding!".  Yes, that's right, a Harley Wedding! That is exactly what Terry Hauser and Courtne Klinger did on a beautiful, sunny day at the #1 Cycle Center in Centre Hall, PA on June 12, 2010.  Terry Hauser, an avid motorcyclist most of his life, and his fiance` Courtne, knew exactly how they wanted their union of lives to start off as; a Harley themed wedding, surrounded by family and friends, the wedding party wearing jeans, boots and of course, Harley Davidson mechanic shirts!  However, one of the most important parts of the day, and most precious, was when the bride was walked down the aisle by her two children, dressed no other than, biker style!

Terry and Courtne were married in the gazebo in front of the Harley Shop, with the reception being held in the new barn that was just Harley Weddingbuilt on the property. The reception hall was smitten with colors of black and orange and Harley Davidson emblems were plentiful.  It truly was a gorgeous day for a true Harley Wedding surrounded by wonderful family and friends. Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hauser, may your lives be filled with love, health, and happiness!

Central PA Street Machines Auto Show

Wed, Sep 01, 2010

On July 4th we traveled to the Piper Air Field in Lock Haven, PA for the Central PA Street Machines Car show.  The temperaturs were soaring in the 90's, the humidity was high, but that didn't stop over 150 cars, trucks, and motorcycles from coming out to partake in this well organized and very entertaining show. The show had a flea market, venders, live bands and the quality of the cars were unbelievable.

25th Annual Last Cruise

The 25th Annual Last Cruise, held in Boalsburg, PA on the site of the PA Military Museum, landed on Saturday, July 24th.  It was another hot and humid weekend but that didn't stop folks from coming out and enjoying the day!  The Last Cruise always brings out cars you normally don’t see anywhere else, and this year was no exception. The Last Cruise has become a great tradition over the years and the proceeds benefit The Centre County Youth Service Bureau.

Tim Cleary with his 1958 Berkeley Model 328, not a car you see every day.  What makes the car really different is that it's Tim's master  thesis.  The Berkeley is now an electric hybrid that Tim claims to get 118 MPG!

One of the vehicles that really caught our eye was the perfect woodwork on this 1950 Chrysler, owned by Paul and Maralyn Mazza.

And we can't forget about this friendly, fuzzy visitor: Smokey the Bear!  Smokey stopped in for a Jeep ride.

Show Some Love for Sara

By Courtne Hauser   Wed, Sep 01, 2010

"Show Some Love for Sara" occured on July 31, 2010 , organized by the Women Motorycycle Riders of Central PA.  This event was for an amazing young girl after she was injured in a horrible accident several months ago.  She suffered a severe head injury and faces a long recovery, leaving her medical bills no other option but pile up. The entire local biker community pulled together and raised money for this family to help with her medical costs.  It was a beautiful day to ride and a wonderful turnout with over 100 bikes.  The ride started at the Pine Grove Mills VFW and ended at the Potters Mills VFW.  It was such a special day to see so many people come out and support a wonderful cause.  It was such an honor to be a part of a great community. Best of luck to Sara in her recovery!

'Live Free Ride Alive" Campaign

By Crystal G.   Wed, Sep 01, 2010

'Live Free Ride Alive" Campaign

PennDOT has launched a new campaign titled "Live Free Ride Alive" in hopes of reducing the number of deaths and injuries as a result of motorcycle crashes. Several types of media are being utilized to get the word out to motorcyclists that the greatest impacts on crash severity are factors that are under their control.

The interactive website is designed for motorcyclists and hosts a variety of tools and information.  A documentary made by motorcyclists for motorcyclists really hits home for many.  It brings to light the reality of motorcycle riding and the results of choosing to ride.  If you have a story to share, whether good or bad, be sure to submit it to the website.  It just might be included into the documentary.

While you're on the website, be sure to take the "Be One Less" pledge memorializing your commitment to avoid risky behavior.

There is also a special "Live Free Ride Alive" motorcycle license plate available for a limited time.  If you are purchasing a motorcycle and need a new plate, you can choose the plate at that time.  If you already have a bike and a license plate, there is a request form on the website to get one of the "Live Free Ride Alive" plates.

Lastly, the site contains important safety messages relating to getting properly licensed, reducing aggressive driving behaviors by obeying the speed limit, avoiding drinking and riding and always wearing protective riding gear.

Remember, taking personal responsibility is crucial when it comes to our own safety!

Be sure to visit the website and take the pledge!  http://www.LiveFreeRideAlive.com

PA Miliitary Museum

PA Miliitary Museum

We recently had the chance to visit and tour the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, PA.  Inside and out, this museum had something of interest for everyone.  Weapons, military vehicles, pictures, videos and more were plentiful and blended beautifully with stories of our past.  It's a definite must see for those that haven't had the chance to visit yet.  Even if you're not a history buff, I highly suggest making the time to stop and see just a little bit o' history!

The History of A.B.A.T.E. - Part 4

By   Wed, Sep 01, 2010

History of ABATE

During the early years, A.B.A.T.E. of PA had few legislative supporters. We were a little rough around the edges and hadn’t yet learned how to influence legislation in Harrisburg. There were a few legislators, though, who saw us as friends even though they weren’t ready to be seen with us yet. One of the most influential was Senator Clarence Bell.

In 1985, A.B.A.T.E. of PA hired its first lobbyist, Herb Packer.history of abate

In 1987, A.B.A.T.E. of PA created BikePAC as an independent, fully chartered PAC.

With a lobbyist and a PAC, A.B.A.T.E. of PA was finally in a position to begin influencing the legislative process. Prior to having these tools in place, A.B.A.T.E. of PA had not moved any major bills out of committee.

Three years later, on November 20, 1990, A.B.A.T.E. of PA got its first full House vote on a helmet law modification bill. An amendment to HB 1867 offered by Mike Veon was defeated by a vote of 89 yea to 124 nay.

On June 4, 1991, A.B.A.T.E. of PA got its second House vote. HB 369 (introduced by Representative Mike Veon) was defeated by a vote of 77 yea to 124 nay.
In 1992, A.B.A.T.E. of PA got its first Senate vote. SB 7 (introduced by Senator Clarence Bell) was defeated by a vote of 21 yea to 26 nay.

history of abateThese votes represented significant progress in that A.B.A.T.E. of PA had learned how to navigate the committee process and move bills to the floor. Many grass-roots organizations never get to that point. Unfortunately, a floor vote in only one of the many hurdles a bill must pass before coming law. A.B.A.T.E. of PA was learning just how hard it is to get a bill over all of them.

From 1992 to 1997, A.B.A.T.E. of PA spent its time building a legislative majority in both houses. One vote at a time, it took five years before another attempt was deemed practical.

Rides & Rods 2010

By Crystal G.   Wed, Sep 01, 2010

Rides & Rods 2010 was held on June 13, 2010.  This year's event was put on to raise money for The Fisher House Foundation.  The Fisher House program supports America's military in their time of need by providing a "home away from home" that enables veterans' family members to be close to their loved one at the most stressful time, during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.  To learn more about the Fisher House Foundation, be sure to visit their website, http://fisherhouse.org/.

With such a great cause established, Rides & Rods was determined to put on an event that would honor those that have made sacrifices for us.  With that said, there was plenty to do and see!  In addition to a poker run, many other attractions were taking place all over the grounds! Stryker

Vendors lined the parking lot and included A.B.A.T.E. of PA, Bestline Powersports Inc., Moosewood Laser Creations, Central PA Street Machines, King's Funnelcakes and Ride Wide Open to name a few.

Other attractions such as the Army Stryker brought to us by Charlie Co., 2nd Batalion, 112th Inf (M) was a huge hit as spectators were able to climb inside and get a hands-on experience on this sophisticated piece of machinery.  Centre Hall Fire Company also brought a fire truck for the spectators to see as well.  And Ride Wide Open G Girls were on hand selling bottled water, raffle tickets and providing photo ops.

A car, truck, and motorcycle show brought in vehicles from near and far, ranging from Williamsport to Altoona and Lewistown.  Approx. 40 vehicles and 6 bikes were registered before the day was through.

Despite the threatening and intermittent rain showers, the poker run brought in over 113 riders and almost 50 co-riders!  First-timer Angie Hockenberry was the lucky one as she won the high hand on the poker run and scored $150.  Congratulations Angie!

We also had CMA on hand to offer bike blessings and more.  Many thanks for coming out and providing our event with your blessings!

Bike games also sprawled the grounds drawing a large crowd.  First timer Gene Maylock with his new red Ducati sportbike, named Francesa, took part in the bike games with RWO G Girl Charity, and proved that he can run with the big dogs on the grass too! Way to go Gene!  America's Guardians MC member, Scott "Scooter" Weaver also took part, accompanied by his girlfriend Amanda.  Kudos goes out to Amanda for being a fierce first-timer competitive on the bike games as well!

Bike Games            And last but certainly not least was the generous bands, sound, and DJ personnel that helped to make this day an even bigger success!  Special thanks goes to the bands, Big Daddy Bangers, Shiver, Nite Kast, and G211 for generously donating your amazing talent to us this day.  Unfortunately Mother Nature kept us from hearing G211, but I will be sure to make it out to hear them play real soon!  Thanks also goes to GP Audio for providing the sound, stage, etc. for the bands all day long, you guys/gals did great!  And finally Party Player Entertainment who kept us bopping from 10am and all throughout the day between the band sets.  Be sure to check out RWO Rock It's section for more on the bands!

Finally, many thanks goes to all the supporters, sponsors, vendors, riders, co-riders, show participants, spectators and all those that made donations, as well as the volunteers that helped to make this event a huge success. Approximately $5000 was raised for the Fisher House Foundation and it makes for a great feeling to know that through all the hard work, late nights, and countless hours there will be a family, maybe even more, that will not have to worry about their housing costs while supporting their loved one.  For a complete list of sponsors of this event, visit the Rides & Rods website.

And don't forget! Visit RWO Photo Gallery for photos of this event and more!

We can't wait to see you all at Rides & Rods 2011!  Please be sure to check back often as there will be some BIG changes coming!
